Loney Dear's gauzy pop can be entrancing, but it's also incredibly easy to tune out: Let your mind wander, and the Swedish act's latest goes full blur. But like M83's Anthony Gonzalez, singer-songwriter Emil Svanängen has an affinity for pretty fuzz and a knack for subtly soulful melodies. At times, he even brings them into focus for you: The gorgeous title track (sample lyric: "I'm slumbering to music / My limbs cease to hurt") approaches the crafty romanticism of countryman and sonic soul brother Jens Lekman. Ladyhawke (AKA New Zealand girl Pip Brown) was raised in the 80's with
a musical family and grew up listening to the likes of Stevie Nicks,
Deep Purple and Joan Jett. Beginning as the drummer in a school band,
Pip plays four different instruments on her debut album. She moved to
Sydney a few years back and then moved to London in 2007 where she
wrote and recorded the album. Pip wrote, arranged and plays on all the
songs on the album working alongside several guest producers. 'Magic',
'Another Runway', 'My Delirium', 'Morning Dreams' and 'Dusk Till Dawn'
were produced with her chief collaborator, world-renowned producer
Pascal Gabriel
Their ninth full-length. The whoops and hollers that previously held
together the sublime, chaotic urgency of their earlier work now signal
the calm sense of euphoria and wonder that ripples through this wide
eyed record.
